Passing Through: Mineola, Texas

Things to see and do on a quick stop in Mineola, Texas

Mineola is a small east Texas town with an interesting main street, and has the added bonus of being fried pie country! We got ours from Mineola Mercantile's Farm House Fried Pies, and while the lemon and Bavarian flavors were extremely tasty, we regretted that we arrived too late in the day to try the popular moonshine flavor. Across the street at the East Texas Burger Co., a restaurant sign advertised more fried pies. If, for some reason, fried pies aren't your thing, The Fudge Shop & Bakery inside Between Friends in downtown Mineola offers an alternative that's just as sweet.

You know what goes great with fried pies? Coffee! Or Chai, in my case. It was a damp and chilly day when we found Cafe U, and its hot drinks and cozy atmosphere was the perfect spot to warm up and peruse its gift shop shelves before heading back on the road.

Mineola is also a fun stop for historical facade lovers, with decorative buildings, retro signs and the Lake Country Playhouse/Historic Select Theater, built in 1920 and still showing movies today.

Mineola Travel Notes:

We have stopped in Mineola multiple times as an alternative route to I20 between Dallas and East Texas. We have found plenty to see and do, with convenient parking and walk-ability. Our stays in Mineola have been roughly an hour, and haven't included full meals. But one could make a half-day visit and find plenty to do.
