We had an opportunity for a quick trip to Austin a few weeks ago. Austin is one of my favorite places to visit, and from an art and culture perspective, it's hard to beat. I love how much public/permanent art the city has on display, and Austin museums and Austin galleries have consistently been interesting and high-quality.

Austin Weekend Getaway

The Contemporary Austin - Laguna Gloria , Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Garden, is always a favorite. Situated along the Colorado River, the art seems to rise out of a diverse ecosystem of woodlands, wildflowers and meadows. It feels magical, and every piece is encountered with a sense of discovery and anticipation of what might be around the next corner, or behind the next tree.

Austin also has some great galleries to explore. On this trip, we stopped in at GrayDUCK Gallery in East Austin, and our forever-favorite Yard Dog Art on South Congress.

We took advantage of the long holiday weekend to see the summer exhibitions at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Kimbell Art Museum.

"Disappearing--California" and "David Park: A Retrospective" were amazing and provided a nice aesthetic contrast to "Monet: The Late Years" at the Kimbell. The Monet exhibit was beautiful and deep. Monet is one of the most famous artists in the world, but the exhibit still taught me new things about him, and exposed me to new work. "Disappearing -- California" is on view through August 11, and "David Park: A Retrospective" is up through Sept. 22, both at the Modern. "Monet: The Late Years" is at the Kimbell through Sept. 15.

This exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art was simply perfect. From the wide range of fashions to the exhibition design to the sheer gorgeousness and exquisite craftsmanship of the clothing, it was exceptional in every way. It would have been easy for the DMA to lean on the designs to carry the show, but lucky for us, it went the extra mile. I especially loved that it paired art from its permanent collection with the groupings, which provided continuity and reminded visitors where they were, and what treasures it had to offer.
